EEP Charter School Districts

Through the USDOE grant-funded Educator Effectiveness Process (EEP) and the Equity Teacher Pipeline and Recruitment (TSL) project, Youth Empowerment Services, Inc. is the non-profit sponsor working together with charter school districts in the following cities in Texas and Arizona to ensure all students have access to effective teachers from Day 1.

Aristoi Classical Academy (Katy, TX)

Aristoi provides students with an academically challenging Classical Liberal Arts education that encourages them to develop a passion for learning and that gives them the means to become responsible citizens of virtuous character.

The vision of Beta Academy is to establish a world-class school through a culture of “joyful rigor” to develop scholars and leaders who can contribute competitively on a community, national, and international level.

Empower College Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

The average Empower student shows 167% of growth each year. As an “A” rated charter school, Empower College Prep is dedicated to providing a superior education to every student that will have them ready for college success.

Two campuses:

1. Empower College Prep Elementary School is located on the campus of North Phoenix Baptist Church at 5757 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85012.

Espiritu Schools (Phoenix, AZ)

Espiritu focuses on forming intellectual, virtuous, and loving servant leaders who form other leaders, who build spirit in their families and communities.

FitKids' Champion Schools (Phoenix, Chandler, and San Tan Valley, AZ)

FitKids’ Champion Schools is dedicated to fostering academic excellence through the integration of accelerated content rich curriculum, using powerful and diverse instructional techniques encouraging critical thinking and the development of problem-solving skills. We will also use the community as a laboratory to construct knowledge though exploration and discovery.

George Gervin Youth Center District (San Antonio, TX & Phoenix, AZ)

George Gervin Academy - Main (San Antonio)

Established in 1995 as part of the George Gervin Youth Center organization founded by George “Iceman” Gervin, a former San Antonio Spurs player and member of the NBA Hall of Fame, George Gervin Academy is a free public charter school that serves students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Students at George Gervin Academy meet or exceed state target scores for student achievement, student progress, closing performance gaps, and meeting postsecondary readiness. George Gervin Academy earned the 2013 accountability rating of “Met Standard,” the highest possible rating.

The Academy’s campus includes three full-size gymnasiums with a weight room and a walking track. Students can learn new skills in the auto and repair shop as well as the creative learning center.

George Gervin Academy - Ruth Jones McClendon (San Antonio)

The Ruth Jones McClendon Middle School of the George Gervin Youth Center organization is named after Ruth Jones McClendon who has served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives for the past 11 years, representing District 120 in San Antonio.

McClendon is the recipient of the 2006 Regional and State “Legislator of the Year” awards from the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards. With a focus on technology, this school offers Home Economic classes and advance class options for EOC credit.

George Gervin Academy (San Antonio)

This school offers a unique opportunity for students that need credit recovery. The dropout-recovery program is completely online using the A+ Learning program that is tailored to fit all learning styles, interests and needs of students.

Lessons are enhanced by graphics and multimedia pictures in order to keep the student’s attention.

Teachers and staff members work one-on-one with students to determine their needs and create effective plans that ensure student success.

George Gervin Prep Academy (Phoenix, AZ)

This is a unique school for Phoenix youth, preparing them for college with rigorous coursework while teaching responsible thinking and community service projects.

George Gervin Prep Academy offers a top-notch music-program, an Art Club where students can stretch and learn creatively, and the option of single-gender classes.

George Gervin Academy-Walzem (San Antonio)

Previously Shekinah Radiance of Learning-Walzem, this school is now located on the George Gervin Academy Main campus allowing access to three full-size gymnasiums with a weight room and a walking track.

The class sizes are purposely small to provide one-on-one instruction and provide more positive behavior. This allows teachers to build closer relationships with students and students’ families.

This campus offers all day Pre-K classes with extended after school care.

George Gervin Academy - Fredericksburg Rd. (San Antonio)

George Gervin Academy-Fredericksburg Road formerly known as Higgs, Carter, King Charter Gifted and Talented Charter Academy started providing charter school educational services in 1998 under the non-profit organization of Youth Empowerment Services, Inc.

Higgs, Carter, King Gifted and Talented Charter Academy was nationally recognized and honored by New Leaders for New Schools’ Effective Practice Incentive Community (EPIC) program for its significant student achievement gain on the Texas TAKS achievement tests in 2007-08.

The school services students from pre-kindergarten to grade 5.

Small class sizes allow more one-on-one instruction and promote more positive behavior. This allows teachers to build closer relationships with students and students’ families.

Pensar Academy (Glendale/Phoenix, AZ)

Por Vida Academy Charter District (Corpus Christi & San Antonio)

Por Vida Charter District is one of the original Charter Districts in the State of Texas. They have grown significantly since they first opened their doors of their San Antonio campus Por Vida Academy in 1995.

Por Vida Academy

Por Vida Academy Charter High School is an alternative high school on the campus of Blessed Sacrament Academy. Por Vida Academy offers three types of diplomas for students seeking an alternative to public schools: Traditional diploma; Credit recovery (with no age limit); and GED classes. This campus is also an official GED Testing Center.

Cesar E. Chavez Academy (Corpus Christi, TX)

Cesar E. Chavez is a small school currently serving approximately 110 students, with a maximum enrollment of 125 students.

The small number of students allows educators to provide the one on one attention that is necessary for the student population.

All staff members know each student by name and have an open relationship that allows the students to feel safe and a part of the Cesar E. Chavez Academy family.

Cesar E. Chavez offers core subjects using differentiated instructional strategies to engage and excite the students about their learning experience.

The school also supplements traditional classroom instruction with PLATO, a computer-based program, and Grad Academy, paper-based modules, for students who need to recover credits.

Cesar E. Chavez Academy in Corpus Christi, TX was added to the Por Vida Charter District in 2007.

Corpus Christi College Prep (Corpus Christi, TX)

Corpus Christi College Preparatory High School offers a unique opportunity for students who want a non-traditional experience-based education that will prepare them to be successful in the college of their choice.

The small class sizes allow for the identification of each student’s learning style and to tailor our instruction to empower individual learning strengths. Whenever possible, off-campus learning experiences to integrate the four foundational elements of a classical education: math, science, language arts, and the study of history and government.

Hands-on projects are created that impact the community in positive ways and Internships are facilitated to provide mentoring for students to acquire valuable real-life skills.

Corpus Christi College Prep in Corpus Christi, TX was added to the Por Vida Charter District in 2001.

Positive Solutions High School District (San Antonio, TX)

Positive Solutions High School

Positive Solutions Charter School has been the solution to many a student’s problems about wanting to finish high school.

The school received a Texas State Accountability rating of “met alternative standard.”

90%-95% of students are considered at risk of dropping out of school; 90%-95% of students are economically disadvantaged; and over 50% of the student population is over he age of 17.

The school uses module instruction with accelerated/individualized instruction focused on credit recovery and direct-teach for core subjects that require End of Course testing.

Positive Solutions Charter School also offers a GED program for student over the age of 19.

The student population of 183 students has grown by 16% over five years, and the district’s graduation rate of 76% has increased from 25% during the same time period.

The Rhodes School (Houston, TX)

The Rhodes School is a state of Texas fine art magnet charter school. 

The goal of The Rhodes School is to expand the educational choice of families in northeast Houston and provide increased opportunities for students from different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to interact with each other.

The goal is accomplished through a fine art magnet charter school which offers art, dance, drama, and classical music as part of the core curriculum. The Rhodes School is free to all who attend.

A large portion of students from the target areas are considered at-risk because of socioeconomic and/or academic indicators. The Rhodes School's magnet school model, which integrates the fine arts as part of the curriculum, reduces the impact of at-risk factors for these students.

Southwest Prep - Northeast

Southwest Prep-Northeast will be expanding from K-2 to Pre-K through 5th for the 2017-18 school year. The class sizes are purposely small to provide one-on-one instruction and provide more positive behavior. This allows teachers to build closer relationships with students and students’ families.

Southwest Prep-Northeast is growing their own students to transition the Southwest Prep-New Directions.

Southwest Prep - New Directions

Southwest Prep-New Directions receives students from its feeder school, the Southwest Prep-Northeast campus. The class sizes are purposely small to provide one-on-one instruction and provide more positive behavior. This allows teachers to build closer relationships with students and students’ families.

Approximately 30% of incoming grade 9 students enroll for the credit recovery classes to promote their educational career to prepare for college.

Southwest Prep Northwest

Educators are dedicated to academic success with the enrichment of the arts.

Students learn through project based learning models and are encouraged to creatively problem solve demonstrating their commitment to learning and the use of their arts.

Leadership attributes are strongly encouraged and taught as part of their overall development. High standards for havior and academics are stressed throughout the curriculum. 

Southwest Prep - Northwest Elementary

Southwest Prep-Northwest Elementary offers a family-based, Christian learning environment.

Math and Reading specialist are on campus to offer added support for students in need.

The Southwest Prep-Northwest Elementary students transition to the Southwest Prep-Northwest campus.

Southwest Prep Southeast

The Southwest Prep-Southeast campus is a part of one of the largest charter school districts in the San Antonia area serving the southeast side of San Antonio.

It is the only academically acceptable, under ADA, in the area and has consistently outperformed surrounding schools.

Since implementing the Educator Effectiveness Process (EPP) model, the campus has expanded from grades 9-12 to all grade levels, P-K through grade 12. 

A Math Specialist and Reading Specialist are available for all students in need, and a Reading Comprehension Specialist is available for early childhood.

Southwest Preparatory-Southeast offers several extra-curricular sporting activities.

Southwest Prep (Seguin, TX)

As the newest edition of the Southwest Preparatory School district, Southwest Prep-Seguin services pre-kindergarten through Fifth Grade students in the Seguin area.

The rural environment provides unique opportunities for nature and environmental projects.

Texas Serenity Academy (Houston, TX)

The mission of Texas Serenity Academy is to provide an exemplary education for all students by creating a safe learning environment, in a way that students can learn, be challenged and feel valued, so that their success produces respect, responsibility and productive citizens of our community.
