What is Augmented Reality in Virtual Education?

BLOG excerpt-1

Just when you think the ways educators can reach students have met its’ threshold, learning finds a way to travel beyond the classroom and come alive right before their eyes! It is a known fact that all educational institutions are open to making learning more engaging for their students, but what better way to ensure the impact of students’ learning experiences than to simulate an experience in the classroom?

The landscape as it pertains to technology in education introduces various options to expand learning to unthinkable heights using Augmented Reality (AR) technologies and applications. Today, according to Jasoren, progressive schools would rather have the power of technology in their classrooms! Data has shown that bringing technology to schools and universities raises the quality of education to a much higher level than the traditional textbook experience. New learning formats lead to greater student engagement, which, in turn, makes the knowledge and skills stay longer. This goes to show that as long as people dare to be innovative, the field of education will always find ways to stretch and expand as our world continues to do so.

Let’s face it, education has always relied on the more visual and tactile components. Within every lesson plan, there is a space dedicated to incorporate visual and tactile learning materials and activities. Augmented Reality can go great lengths in meeting classroom objectives no matter what subject or grade level. Like any classroom tool, the key is to set the experience up based on the audience! By putting on VR headsets, students can find themselves in deserts, rainforests, or even see hurricanes and earthquakes happening right in front of their eyes! By watching from their phone or tablet screen it can allow them to understand how a volcano works all by observing it from the inside! Interactive applications allow not only passive watching but also active participation in the practical and most important part of the lesson giving students real hands-on experience. This blog will explore learning that is attained using a form of technology that augments reality and how it can expand learning on a virtual platform.

The World of Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented Reality is a form of technology that “augments” the world around us. In this context, it means in most cases overlaying virtual objects over real images often on a digital screen, or, in the more advanced cases, using special AR glasses, such as Microsoft Hololens. However, the same magic can be achieved using applications as simple as a phone app. This makes augmented reality technology especially adaptable for use in the education industry. Many education apps include printable markers that teachers can use in the classroom. When the kids point their smartphone cameras at the markers, something fascinating pops out!

Augmented reality began to reach the public eye around 2018 eventually impacting every professional sector. Today Augmented Reality is used in entertainment, military training, engineering design, robotics, manufacturing, and various other industries. The growth of augmented reality applications can be attributed to the ability to place digital content into your own space giving people the ability to train, evaluate, and even learn differently!

Now, these applications are available through something as simple and accessible as a phone application making learning itself more accessible, engaging, and specific. It’s no surprise that this makes its appeal to educators more intense and promising. Check out this 4-minute video below to explore how educators are using Augmented Reality to educate and empower their students:

Augmented Reality is CHANGING Education

Augmented reality bridges the gap between the physical and digital world in a way that expands learning itself! According to ZealAR, these opportunities expand much further than just a cool new way to capture your students’ attention. Learning with Augmented Reality can, among many other benefits, increase comprehension of the learning materials, address individual learning needs, as well as encourage and promote collaborative learning that empowers students. Some of the benefits that are guaranteed by using AR according to educators around the world are as follows:

AR Makes Education More Inspiring - Educators in Australia who are using augmented reality have goals of returning education to its original aim -- to appeal and inspire! They are being encouraged to use interactive illustrations that can hold the attention of their students who are already used to spending hours on their smartphones. They believe that AR teaching aids can put an end to classroom boredom.

AR Brings Experiential Learning into the Classroom - Immerse students in the learning, they’d have no choice but to be engaged and captured by their own fascination! This kind of experiential learning is beneficial for both students and teachers alike. Not only do the students learn better this way, but it also takes steps to reroute the image of learning making teachers seem more adventurous!

AR Promotes Collaborative Learning - Interactive AR apps in education are great at providing students with a feeling of freedom as well as control over what and how they learn! Teachers in Melbourne are empowering students to develop and improve their problem-solving skills, collaborate, and co-create in pairs, or a group. This way, students learn more about their innermost passions and work towards making them a reality. How empowering and productive towards their futures!

AR Encourages Better Knowledge Grasping - We have learned in the past several years that people learn faster from multimedia platforms as compared with the information available in the form of text. By using AR applications, the teacher is now able to teach the students every concept from the fundamental base. The best part of this process is that the students actually try to understand numerous complex problems instead of pushing them to the side.

AR Implements Theory Implementation - The best use of augmented reality in any professional sector, especially education, is the real-life implementation part. Instead of students having to conceptualize and imaging the study topic, AR brings the whole concept in front of them. Students can learn about the mysterious galaxies and on the other hand, can have a comprehensive human anatomy lesson in the bio class all with a single click!

AR Gives Students the Ability to Feel the Historic Time - One of the most impactful uses of augmented reality is taking students thousands of years back to show them the origin of mankind! Many augmented reality companies in Australia are working in the education sector to develop more apps for learning students. Studies have proven that the time-traveling movies were correct, traveling back in time is the best way to learn about history and why things came to be.
