Residency Teacher Program for 2020-2021 School Year

Are you interested in attaining your Master’s degree and becoming a certified teacher? Youth Empowerment Services (YES, Inc.) is offering degreed individuals interested in becoming educators the opportunity to attain a Master’s in Education while being integrated into a classroom with a resident advisor teacher to practice teaching. This is made possible by a TSL grant funded by the US Department of Education.

The goal of the Teacher Resident program is to better prepare teachers to be effective educators on day one in the classroom and to increase retention in high need schools.

Working in one of our districts as a Resident Teacher will provide you with a clear path for professional growth and development as an educator through external and job-embedded professional development and career ladder opportunities while continuing to positively impact student lives.

  • The Resident will be a college graduate who is not certified.

  • The Resident will need to be accepted into the Relay Graduate School of Education or the University of Texas at San Antonio graduate program.

  • Acceptance is based on a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, official degree conferred transcript, resume and cover letter.

  • The Grant will pay the Residents a stipend of $30,000 each for one year.

  • The Grant will pay the Residents benefits for one year.

  • The Resident will serve under a teacher (Resident Advisor) for one year.

  • The districts will pay the salary and benefits for year two.

  • The residents will slowly be integrated into the classroom to practice teaching.

  • The Resident will attend classes at Relay Graduate School of Education or University of Texas at San Antonio, only, to pursue a Master’s degree in Education. (Residents cannot choose their own University.)

  • The Resident will pursue teacher certification concurrently.

  • The Resident will receive instructional support from the University.

  • After one year, the Resident will be offered a classroom teaching position and will be the teacher of record.

  • After two years, the Resident will be certified and hold a Master’s degree in Education in their content area.

  • Each Resident will be assigned a Resident Advisor.

  • At the end of the two-year Residency program, each Resident will sign an agreement to remain with their district for three additional school years.

The Selection Process

STEP 1: Submit! By October 26, 2018, submit your resume and cover letter for the 2019-2020 school year. 

STEP 2: Qualify! By October 31, your resume and cover letter will be screened to determine if you qualify for additional screening.

STEP 3: Attend! If you qualify, you will be invited to what can be the most exhilarating week of your life as you participate in the training (all expenses paid) entitled "Fundamental Foundation Session #1". You will have two options to choose from. Option 1 is November 12-16, 2018. Option 2 is December 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 only available to applicants residing in San Antonio. 

  • You will be involved in unique educational activities that could ‘seal the deal’ for you to earn a slot as one of our new effective educators.

This is a mandatory session. If you cannot attend these dates, you will not be considered for the next round. 

STEP 4: Teach! January 14-18, 2019, if you qualify, you will be invited to teach a live lesson for a group of students in one of our schools where you will be observed by a group of YES, Inc. staff members, principal, and other educators in the school.

STEP 5: Interview! In March 2019, if you are successful in your lesson in January, you will be invited to interview with YES, Inc. staff members, principals, and other educators.

STEP 6: Join! Districts will then begin making offers for positions to final candidates starting in March.

Note: All new hires for each district must attend the mandatory Intensive Educator Preparation May 28-June 14, 2019.
